Post-traumatic stress disorder can be caused by virtually any kind of high stress and frightening situation. However, there are several factors that are always present in an event that causes PTSD. Those are:

A life-threatening situation and/or a situation that could lead to a serious injury, and

A reaction by the PTSD sufferer that involved helplessness, horror or intense fear.

It is not uncommon for an Alberta resident to develop PTSD after a being in a serious car accident or some other kind of traumatic event. In addition to car accidents, rape and sexual assault can cause PTSD. Long term physical or sexual abuse can result in the condition as well. So can a major surgery, witnessing a natural disaster or being subjected to torture or imprisonment.

Victims or witnesses of a violent crime like murder, assault, and kidnapping can suffer PTSD. Seeing battle in a war or experiencing other types of violence related to war can cause someone to suffer PTSD.

At the Ludwar Law Firm, we know how to present cases relating to PTSD in court and we look for the symptoms of this condition in our clients who have been involved in serious accidents. In fact, for some car accident victims, their physical injuries are the least of their concerns. Many people suffer from PTSD for the rest of their lives, long after their car accident injuries have healed.

If you suffer severe depression or anxiety when you are reminded of a particular event, if you have frequent nightmares relating to a car accident and if you are plagued by frightening memories of an accident, you may want to visit a doctor to be evaluated for PTSD.
